NEWARK, NJ – On Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), Mayor Ras J. Baraka hosted a roundtable discussion centering on the potential and impact of guaranteed income as a viable policy solution. This event coincides with the conclusion of Newark’s guaranteed income pilot program, the Newark Movement for Economic Equity, which has recently unveiled preliminary data from independent researchers indicating its efficacy.
Participants, including Jennymarie Idrobo, of the Newark Movement for Economic Equity, actively engaged in this dialogue.
As part of the Guaranteed Income Works national tour, the event featured a screening of “It’s Basic,” a documentary tracing the journeys of guaranteed income beneficiaries from various pilot programs nationwide, including Newark. Through the lens of these individuals, the film delves into the significance of financial stability and dignity. Award-winning filmmaker Marc Levin joined the roundtable discussion following the screening, offering his insights into the transformative potential of guaranteed income initiatives.
